New Licensing Laws; City Life closure

New licensing laws concerning the governing of licensed premises in England and Wales, including the provision of live entertainment, came into effect last week. Although it is too early to shape opinions about the effects the new legislation will have on live music, we, and many other interested parties, are keeping tabs on progress. The legislation can be viewed at http://ww.culture.gov.uk/alcohol_and_entertainment .

Upsetting news has just reached us of the imminent axing of City Life, Manchester 's long-established listings magazine, by its current owners, the Guardian Media Group.  Many people will have enjoyed and used this magazine during its lifetime, especially the jazz listings compiled by Mike Butler. The National Union of Journalists is currently leading a campaign to save it; any letters of protest can be sent to mark.dodson@men-news.co.uk and should be copied to nujmanchester@nuj.org.uk.
