Manchester and Lancaster rock London…

Jon Thorne returns from an exquisite performance at QEH; Stephen Grew hits at the Spitz

Congratulations to two very different but equally passionate NW players for helping to put the region's players on the national map with compelling gigs at the recent London Jazz Festival.  Jon Thorne's Oedipus Complex played to a packed QEH foyer, with a mellow vibe of originals from his pending new CD release. Steve Brown's masterful and understated Rhodes playing was perfectly matched by Luke Flowers' propelling drums; Neil Yates' plaintive trumpet guested on a few songs – he was in town to formally receive his recent Take 5 award. Meanwhile, Lancaster's Stephen Grew took his electronic improvising ensemble to the Spitz, for a gig supporting Polar Bear and Clive Bell, and in doing so earnt the accolade of the Pick of the Day gig on the BBC website.
